One man was paying for his surgery
By working as an orderly.
"Plainly those who can afford the treatment
Are also the most deserving of it,
And I'm proud to hand over a kidney
To even up my credit history."

He explained that millions lived like him
In unused classrooms and unused school gyms,
On strips of grasslands between turnpike lanes,
In strip malls abandoned when retail waned,
Debtors condemned for bleak eternity,
Living where once they had community.
